A novel by Lawrence Reinhold

Missouri Khals

Ambition, intelligence, and the enduring strength of friendship.

Synopsis

From a sheep station in Australia’s Great Southern region to Olympic competition and international espionage, Missouri Khals’s life is shaped by ambition, duty, and her lifelong bond with Bindi.

Missouri and Bindi grow up together on Missouri’s parents’ sheep station, where they work as jillaroos. Missouri’s passion for weightlifting earns her a full athletic scholarship and eventually an Olympic gold medal. Her achievements make her a prominent figure in the Australian Armed Forces’ recruitment of women.

As graduation and Missouri’s military service approach, the two friends face a future that could pull them apart. Instead, their lives remain intertwined through Missouri’s distinguished career in the Australian Army’s Intelligence Corps and Bindi’s life of leisure. Their implicit trust becomes a powerful asset as they disrupt Chinese intelligence networks, turn intelligence assets, and obtain highly valued national security information.

Overview - Missouri Khals is an ambitious, sprawling novel that follows its protagonist from rural Australia to Olympic glory to dangerous intelligence operations in China. The work demonstrates strong storytelling instincts with compelling characters and an intricate plot spanning multiple countries and time periods.

Story strengths:

  • Complex female protagonist: Missouri Khals is a multi-dimensional character who evolves from a sheep station girl to an Olympic champion to a Special Forces officer, making her journey compelling and believable.
  • Rich cultural authenticity: The portrayal of Australian rural life, Aboriginal culture, and the dynamics between different ethnic communities demonstrates thorough research and genuine understanding.
  • Intricate espionage plotting: The intelligence operations, particularly involving China's AI development and the use of escort services as cover, create sophisticated and believable spycraft scenarios.
  • Strong friendship dynamics: The lifelong bond between Missouri and Bindi provides emotional weight and drives many of the story's most compelling moments.
  • Detailed military authenticity: The Special Forces training sequences, military protocols, and combat scenes display impressive technical knowledge and realistic detail.

Premise / Elevator Pitch - An Australian sheep station girl becomes an Olympic weightlifting champion and Special Forces officer who embarks on dangerous intelligence missions in China alongside her lifelong friend and fellow escort worker while navigating blackmail, espionage, and a high-stakes rescue operation.

Potential Readers - Missouri Khals will appeal to readers who enjoy complex female protagonists in military and espionage settings, particularly those interested in Australian perspectives and contemporary geopolitical tensions.

Archetype - Missouri Khals is most similar to the Descent story archetype.

Genre & Story Type - Missouri Khals is primarily a Military Thriller with strong espionage elements. The story also contains elements of the following:

  • Contemporary Women's Fiction
  • Coming-of-Age Fiction
  • Adventure Fiction
  • Political Thriller
  • Biographical Fiction
  • Romance
  • Erotic Fiction
  • Action/Adventure
  • International Fiction

Analysis of Major Elements - Modern fiction readers expect stories to build on fundamental narrative structures that create emotional engagement and satisfy storytelling conventions established in literature since ancient times, particularly in genre fiction where specific beats and turning points guide reader expectations.

  • Hook: The opening scene showing Missouri receiving her university acceptance letter provides an effective hook by immediately establishing her as someone special with "exceptional ability" and showing the life-changing moment that will take her away from the sheep station. This works well because it promises transformation and adventure.
  • The opening: The first chapter successfully establishes Missouri's world, relationships, and capabilities while setting up the major life transition that will drive the early plot. The writing immediately shows her close bond with Bindi and her athletic abilities, though it could move slightly faster into the university setting to maintain momentum.
  • Relatable protagonist: Missouri is successfully portrayed as likable through her loyalty to Bindi, respect for Aboriginal culture, and determination to succeed through hard work rather than privilege. Her rural background and athletic dedication make her accessible to readers.
  • Inciting incident: The inciting incident is Missouri's acceptance to university, which sets in motion her departure from the sheep station and entry into a larger world. This occurs appropriately early and provides clear motivation for the ensuing changes in her life.
  • Call to adventure: Missouri doesn't resist her university opportunity, but she does initially hesitate about military recruitment and intelligence work, showing realistic reluctance to leave her comfort zone before accepting greater challenges.
  • First plot point: The first major plot point occurs when Missouri and Bindi begin working for the escort service, fundamentally changing their lives and opening the door to intelligence work. This shifts the story into its main trajectory.
  • Midpoint shift: The midpoint occurs when Missouri completes Special Forces training and receives her first command, representing her transformation from student to warrior. This happens at roughly the correct story percentage and provides appropriate elevation of stakes.
  • Second plot point: The second plot point is Bindi's arrest, which creates the final crisis that Missouri must resolve and transforms her from someone following orders to someone taking independent action.
  • Climax: The story's climax is the rescue mission in China, which provides appropriate danger and tests everything Missouri has learned. This should be satisfying to readers as it demonstrates her complete transformation and devotion to friendship.
  • Resolution: The resolution shows both women changed by their experiences, with Missouri promoted and Bindi recovering from trauma. Most major plot threads are resolved, though some personal healing remains ongoing.

Setting & World-Building - The novel spans multiple distinctive locations from rural Australian sheep stations to Chinese detention facilities, with each setting contributing meaningfully to character development and plot advancement. The sheep station provides authentic rural Australian atmosphere while establishing Missouri and Bindi's cultural background and close relationship. The description of Aboriginal cultural connections feels researched and respectful without being overly detailed.

The Olympic venues and military training facilities demonstrate good technical knowledge and create appropriate atmosphere for Missouri's athletic and military development.

The Chinese embassy settings and high-society functions provide authentic international diplomatic atmosphere, though some descriptions become repetitive across multiple similar events.

The Chinese detention facility in Xinjiang is depicted with appropriate grimness and specific detail that serves the plot's rescue requirements while highlighting human rights concerns. However, some urban Chinese settings blend together and could be more distinctively characterized.

The story handles world-building effectively by integrating setting details into character actions rather than stopping for extensive description. The Australian locations feel authentic and grounded, while the international settings demonstrate research and cultural awareness.

Theme Analysis - The primary theme explores the tension between personal loyalty and professional duty, examining how deep friendships survive when career advancement and institutional obligations conflict with personal relationships. This theme is represented through Missouri's willingness to risk her military career and life to rescue Bindi from Chinese imprisonment.

Secondary themes include:

  • Cultural identity and assimilation: The challenge of maintaining Aboriginal cultural connections while succeeding in predominantly white institutions.
  • The cost of moral compromise: How intelligence work requires deception and manipulation that conflicts with personal values.
  • Female empowerment in male institutions: Women breaking barriers in military and intelligence services while facing systemic discrimination.

Word Count - Missouri Khals contains about 95,205 words.

While there are no hard-and-fast rules about minimum and maximum story lengths, there are industry traditions and reader expectations. If you want to give yourself your best chance without having to fight any additional uphill battles, then writing with the word count guidelines for your genre in mind is often the wisest course. (Getting your word count right will also cut down on editing costs.)

Here’s a quick reference for typical word counts by genre:

  • Adult contemporary fiction: 70,000-90,000 words
  • Literary fiction: 80,000-120,000 words
  • Romance: 50,000-90,000 words (mostly 70,000-90,000)
  • Science fiction/Fantasy: 80,000-120,000 words (longer for epic fantasy)
  • Historical fiction: 80,000-120,000 words
  • Mystery/Crime: 60,000-90,000 words (cozy mysteries are shorter)
  • Horror: 80,000-100,000 words
  • Thriller: 70,000-100,000 words
  • Westerns: 50,000-80,000 words
  • Young adult: 50,000-90,000 words

For genre-bending works, the word count should typically align with the genre that has the higher range (e.g., romantic fantasy would follow fantasy’s 80,000-120,000 words). In some cases, indie authors choose to serialize a story — say, three fantasy novels of 40,000 words instead of one novel of 120,000 words.
